If you have been arrested or charged with a criminal offence you must get specialist legal advice as soon as possible so that you can be sure that you understand why you have been arrested and what you are charged with.
If you are in a police station you are entitled to free legal advice from a solicitor regardless of your financial situation. If you are charged with an offence and have to appear in court you may qualify for legal aid.
There are two types of offences for which you may be charged. The first is called a ‘summary’ offence. These are the least serious and you will be tried in a magistrate’s court. The second type of offence is an ‘indictable only’ offence which are for the most serious offences.
